The lidded bowl is quite substantial weighing 8 pounds 10 ounces. The style is similar to traditional, individual Japanese rice bowls with a round base and top. The bottom is white porcealain with blue decoration of flowers and butterflies. The lid of the bowl is highly decorated with five vignettes surrounded by traditional Imari patterns. One vignette is in the raised center of the lid and the other four are around the lid.
The vignettes include exquisite decorations cranes, dragons, phoenix, clouds, flowers and foliage. There is quite a bit of gilt decoration on the lid.
The colors in the decoration include blue, white, gold, orange, green, teal, blue and rose. The white porcelain bottom of the bowl is marked with six characters in blue enamel but I cannot identify it. I believe the rice bowl dates to the Meiji period (1868 - 1912).The workmanship is excellent and the colors are vibrant. I have never seen another Japanese rice bowl of this size in 50+ years of collecting Asian antiques. The wood stand is substantial enough at 763.5 grams to hold the weight of the rice bowl. The reddish-brown wood stand has four feet and displays the bowl beautifully. The stand is in excellent vintage condition with normal wear from use. There are surface scratches, rubs and a few shallow nicks. I find no chips, crack, missing pieces, repairs or damage to the stand. T he rice bowl is in excellent antique condition with expected wear. There are no cracks, chips, damage or repairs. There are a few natural characteristics of old porcelain such as tiny pits, dark spots and bumps. On close inspection, there is a very small dark spot in the design on the lid that could be from original manufacturing or very shallow chip. There may be surface scratches and slight enamel loss. There is a lot of gilt or gold on the bowl and it is in excellent condition. The lid fits nicely on the bottom especially in one location. The inside of the bowl is very bright and has no stains. I did not find any chips, hairlines, cracks, repairs or damage to the bowl. Weight: 8 pounds 10 ounces. Diameter at center: 12 1/2.
